At Theodore Primary School, we believe that every child deserves to enjoy mathematics, be challenged, and show their learning in a way that suits them. We believe students develop a fascination with maths, and that learning should be co-constructed by everyone in the classroom. Mistakes should be celebrated and treated as a learning opportunity. We believe in building mathematical fluency in all our students, and immersing them in mathematical language. We also believe in our students becoming mathematicians and numerate creative problem solvers through making connections to the real world in the classroom.
Every day in our maths classrooms you will see
- Gradual release of responsibility model to support and scaffold student learning
- Workshop model with differentiated tasks at students’ point of need that work towards personalised learning goals
- Warm ups and games for students to practise fluency in number skills
- Classes making real-world connections to concepts and students discussing the value of mathematics to real life
- Opportunities for students to investigate a range of ways to solve complex problems
- Continuous loop of feedback, encouraging dialogue between staff/student and student/student
- Mathematical language around the classroom
- Teachers are dynamic /responsive… actively embracing spontaneous opportunities for authentic contexts for learning with their students
- Celebrating student success in mathematics
