Liability for the loss, damage or theft of students’ personal property at school

Advice from the ACT Government Solicitor indicates that notwithstanding the merits of each particular incident, schools generally cannot be held responsible for the intervening acts of third parties relating to the loss, damage or theft of students' personal property. Parents and students are advised that schools do not provide private insurance cover to automatically compensate for the loss, damage or theft of bicycles or other personal property and nor will they be legally liable for the loss. We request that valuables not be brought to school.

Library

Theodore Primary School library

Students are encouraged to use the library and its resources for reading enjoyment and for personal research and are taught to use its facilities effectively. Each class visits the library once per week to browse new additions and check out books for home reading. In addition to class visits, the library is opened during lunch time for quiet reading, drawing and cooperative games. Our library has an electronic borrowing system.

Lost Property

Students are encouraged to clearly label all personal property, including school uniforms and lunch boxes. Each unit has a container where lost property is kept. At the end of each term named items are returned to the owners and unclaimed items are sent to a charity. There is also a lost property container at the front office.
